Mary is an accomplished researcher, author and lecturer in the field of early childhood education and care. Her work is influenced by research trips to Slovenia, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, New Zealand and Reggio Emilia in Northern Italy. In 2018, Mary achieved her lifelong ambition to work at the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment Institute for Research on Labor and Employment at the University of California, Berkeley. She worked as a volunteer kindergarten teacher with refugee children and their families in Greece in 2016 and 2017.

Mary was awarded a National Teaching Hero Award by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in 2014 in recognition of her work as a lecturer in early childhood education at Mary Immaculate College. She has given keynote addresses at national and international ECEC conferences. Her publications include two books published by Routledge: ‘Early Childhood Education Management: Insights into Business Practice and Leadership’ (2017) and ‘Intentional Leadership for Effective Inclusion in Early Childhood Education and Care (2018). Mary is currently co-authoring a publication with a colleague (Dr Jennifer Pope) at Mary Immaculate College concerned with ‘Empowering Confident and Competent Learners, birth to 3 years old’ ,which she feels is a neglected space in ECEC. Her motto ‘Early Childhood is Everyone’s Business, Make it Yours’ signifies her deeply held belief in the critical importance of early childhood education and care for all children. She is a tireless advocate for the sector focusing in particular upon professional identity, educator well-being, inclusion, leadership and management.  In her spare time, she likes to read (murder mysteries), walk with the love of her life – Chancer, her golden retriever and, spend time with family and friends
