Who are we?
The Froebel Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education is known for the provision of a distinctive student-centred learning experience for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Department is named after the 19th century German educator and founder of Kindergarten, Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852). He advocated reverence for the child, learning through activity, exploration of the environment, enjoyment of beauty in all its manifestations and acceptance of the gifts of each individual.

What Early Childhood Degrees do we offer?

Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Teaching and Learning

In partnership with Early Childhood Ireland, we offer a Level 8 honours Early Childhood degree. It is delivered in a flexible format over 3 years – students attend for one evening per week and one Saturday per month, along with two block weeks, one in Autumn (October) and one in Spring (February or March). There is also a requirement to complete 300 hours of placement (which can be located in a student’s workplace) as well as 15 hours in an alternative setting. The degree positions our graduates to spearhead and lead learning in Early Childhood Care and Education settings, and as well as leadership positions in practice. Many graduates go on to careers in policy development, evaluation agencies, government and non-government organisations and local development agencies, nationally and internationally.

There are a small number of places remaining on the programme for September 2021. We will be accepting applications until 1 February 2021 at 5.15pm.

Master of Education (Research in Practice)

This part time Level 9 programme aims to provide opportunities for educators to explore and examine aspects of their own practice with a view to improving the educational experiences of the children in their care. Central to the programme is the development of a reflective disposition which is a core principle underpinning action research. This Master in Education upholds the concept of teaching as innovative professional practice, combining academic study with research in practice. It is envisaged that successful candidates of the programme will go on to serve key roles in the educational community as curriculum and policy developers.
