Update on the Affordable Childcare Scheme

January 31, 2017

Update on the Affordable Childcare Scheme and ECI’s upcoming appearance before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs

The Heads of Bill, which set out the key areas to be covered by the legislation underpinning the Affordable Childcare Scheme, and a revised FAQ document were published yesterday afternoon (Monday 30th January). ECI will now analyse the documents against the key concerns identified by our members and report back in the next Weekly:

  • Inadequate cost model from the outset, with no consideration to professionalisation
  • Hourly subsidy and hourly fee for childcare
  • Assumptions around parent’s access to and competency with computers/technology
  • Administrative burden for services
  • Requirement of providers to police absences and changes in childcare provision

An ECI delegation led by Teresa Heeney with Panel representation from both community and private services will also present ECI’s position on the Affordable Childcare Scheme before the Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs next Wednesday 8th February at 10:30am in Leinster House.

We welcome input from all members on the implications of the new scheme for your service. Please address any comments or concerns to our Policy Officer, Amy McArdle amcardle@earlychildhoodireland.ie.
