Early Childhood Ireland Response to RTÉ Investigates: Creches – Behind Closed Doors

Press Release: 60,000 children nationwide wear their pyjamas into creche and pre-school today for Early Childhood Ireland’s National Pyjama Day

March 6, 2017

60,000 children from 1,300 creches and preschools around the country are wearing their favourite pyjamas today (Friday 3rd March 2017) for National Pyjama Day, which is an annual fundraiser organised by Early Childhood Ireland that is now in its 14th year, having raised over €2.5 million for children’s charities in Ireland.

The way National Pyjama Day works is that the children are sponsored to wear their pyjamas into creche and preschool to raise money for three children’s charities, each supporting children under 6 years of age with additional needs. This year, Early Childhood Ireland is being supported by the Community Foundation for Ireland to assess and administer grants of between €40,000 and €100,000, based on funds raised, which will be awarded to the three chosen charities to be announced this Summer. CFI’s role is to ensure that the funds raised are allocated in a transparent way and within a commitment to the highest standards of governance.

The Community Foundation for Ireland is a national organisation with an expertise in distributing funds to communities. It was set up in 2000 and is expert in grant making and investing in people and solutions to build stronger communities. CFI has made grants on behalf of donors of over €30m in Ireland and overseas; almost €6m in 2016 alone. Teresa could also talk about that.

Early Childhood Ireland represents over 3,500 childcare members who support over 100,000 children and their families through preschool, afterschool and full daycare provision nationwide. Its work includes quality enhancement, publications, advocacy, training, business support and information for a sector that employs 25,000 people today.
