Promoting the need for greater government investment in the early years

February 12, 2019

Members are aware of our continued calls for greater government investment in the early years sector. This remains a central issue in our policy and advocacy work and as part of this, we took the opportunity to host the Social Policy Network meeting last week.

We hosted the meeting with the goal of raising awareness of historically low government investment in the early years sector among organisations outside our sector. Early Childhood Ireland aims to build more support across society for our ask of increased government investment in the early years sector to ultimately ensure its sustainability, quality and affordability.

The Social Policy Network meeting brings together individuals who work in policy and research in a range of organisations from disability groups to health, and housing. The purpose of the Network is to encourage discussion and information sharing on current policy issues. We hosted the latest meeting in Europe House, which is just next door to our city centre office.

During the meeting, we highlighted some of the impacts of low government investment in the early years sector such as the staffing crisis. Network members discussed the impact of this and shared examples of how other organisations have sought more government investment in their areas of social policy.

We were really encouraged by the lively discussion and debate that took place during the meeting. We hope that we have successfully encouraged other organisations to incorporate early years issues into their own policy work such as in their annual budget submissions.
