Preparation for Budget 2019

June 26, 2018

The Policy, Advocacy and Communications team in Early Childhood Ireland (ECI) has been busy developing the organisation’s recommendations to Government for investment in early childhood education and care (ECEC) in Budget 2019.  While the Budget will not be announced until later in October, and ECI continues to develop a range of recommendations across many areas including: continuous professional development (CPD); commercial rates; capacity planning and the Affordable Childcare Scheme, we have been working on ways to generate support for our recommendations in advance of the negotiations.

One area of acute concern to ECI is the prevailing sustainability crisis in the sector.  With this in mind, ECI tabled a motion on Supporting the viability of early years services through dedicated sustainability funding in Budget 2019 at the National Women’s Council of Ireland’s AGM on Thursday 21 July 2018.  The NWCI is the leading national women’s organisation with 180 member groups and as well as individual members from a diversity of backgrounds, sectors and locations throughout Ireland.

ECI’s motion, delivered by our Policy Officer Amy McArdle, asked the NWCI to support our call on Government to provide additional funding through a dedicated Sustainability Fund to support all early years providers, private and community, whose viability is under threat. The motion speaks to important issues that are central to the NWCI’s work, specifically women having economic independence and women’s care roles being recognised and valued.  We are delighted that the motion received unanimous support from the NWCI membership and we look forward to working with NWCI in the lead-up to Budget 2019.
