“Play on the Brain” Conference: Marte Meo

March 24, 2015

Maria Aarts, Keynote Speaker

Following the huge success of last year’s Marte Meo conference held by Early Childhood Ireland and Tusla in October, we are delighted to announce that Maria Aarts will be the keynote speaker at our annual conference “Play on the Brain” on Saturday 18th April.

Many of you will no doubt be thrilled to hear Maria again and as she delivers her conference keynote on Saturday morning.  It is a real opportunity to be inspired, enthused and energised about the importance of our work in early childhood.

Using the Marte Meo Method

Through her own experience of working with children with additional needs Maria Aarts developed the Marte Meo Method of communication to support children’s development in ordinary, everyday interaction moments.

Using short videos Maria identifies:

  • the skills the child already has

  • skills the child has yet to develop

  • basic strategies to progress that development

In her long carer, Maria has used these strategies in a wide variety of relationships ranging from mothers and infants to carers and the aged in over 40 counties, including many European counties, India and Australia.

The name Marte Meo comes from a Latin term “On ones own strength”.  The focus when working with children is to meet them where they are developmentally and to build on what they can already do.  Research tells us that every interaction we have with a child has an impact on that child. The Marte Meo method give us clear, basic strategies to ensure that our interactions with the children in our care have a positive impact in supporting and progressing their development.
