Members Queries June 2014

1. Do need to get a license to show DVD’s to the children and does it cost about €3.45 per child? Is this true or a scam? What can I do about it?”

Yes it is true and not a scam. Under the Copyright Act you need to have a license to show DVD’s as a public performance and all childcare services showing DVD’s are considered public performances. Consider a No DVD Policy to avoid this cost. MPLC are one of a few licensing companies in Ireland and they can potentially take action against anyone without a license.

2. “I have my insurance with you and we are bringing the children on an outing this week, I’m ringing to let you know.”

It’s a great time of year to get out and about with the children and take on a new adventure. As a member with insurance with Early Childhood Ireland you do not have to ring informing the insurance department of your trip, you are automatically covered for your trip.

 3. What qualifications are required to work in the Early Childhood Care and Education sector?

September 2014 – All new entrants will be required to hold a minimum FETAC/QQI Level 5 qualification.

September 2015 –  All staff in early years services will be required  to hold a full Level 5 qualification and in addition to this all Pre-School  Room Leaders (delivering the ECCE Scheme) will need a full Level 6 qualification (or equivalent ).

*From the Department of Children and Youth Affairs Website

If you unsure what Level your qualification is on the National Framework, please contact the learning institution you obtained your award from, and if you are still unsure please contact  Quality and Qualifications Ireland.

If you are due to retire from working in the early years care sector within the next seven years, you can apply for an exemption from the Level 5 qualification. Exemptions only apply to Level 5, not to the Level 6 qualification requirement.  Arrangements for the exemption for Level 5 will be announced at a later date.
