Making the News: March Media Highlights

This month’s Making the News examines recent media events, including coverage of the Oireachtas Children’s Committee report on challenges facing the Early Years sector, and a series of articles by the Irish Independent.

New Children’s Committee report
.

On Wednesday, 6 March we welcomed the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth’s report on the challenges facing the Early Childhood Care and Education Sector. The report included several Early Childhood Ireland recommendations and proposals, which we outlined to the Committee in November 2023, all of which will benefit children attending settings in Ireland. We were pleased to see the report covered in both the online and the printed editions of the Cork Independent.

Sector news
.

The Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, TD Roderic O’Gorman, has been encouraging parents who use Tusla-registered Early Years services to take advantage of the support available through the National Childcare Scheme (NCS). This initiative received extensive coverage across the country, with articles in outlets like the Corkman, the Limerick Post, and the Laois Nationalist, among many other outlets.

Early Years and School Age Care has also featured prominently in a series of articles in the Irish Independent. The challenges facing both member settings and parents need urgent attention from government and other policy makers. We continue to highlight our key proposals to address them.
