Letter to Minister Zappone on the Future of Sector

July 11, 2017

Letter to Minister Zappone about the future of the Early Childhood Care and Education sector in Ireland.

Last week, ECI published Martina Dunleavy’s story about closing down after 18 years of service. If you missed it, you can read it on our website. The response to Martina’s piece has been overwhelming. Her story speaks for itself and unfortunately it speaks to the experience of many other ECI members. Many providers have contacted us sharing their own concerns about the viability and future of their own services. Many fear they too are heading for closure.  Indeed, since January 2017, ECI has been notified of closures by 10 member services, predominantly private, throughout counties Dublin, Cork, Galway, Mayo, Wicklow and Meath.  The situation is dire and ECI has written to the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone TD, Minister for Employment and Social Protection, Regina Doherty TD, Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe TD, and Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government, Eoghan Murphy TD highlighting Martina’s story. We are calling for significant and sustained Government investment in Budget 2018 and an appreciation by all relevant Ministers of the role they play in ensuring a quality, sustainable and affordable childcare system in Ireland.  We hope that Martina’s story contributes to the overall understanding of the pressures in the sector and that her experience doesn’t become the norm.
