In this month’s Book Corner we are focusing on books about animals, three of which involve farm animals and the fourth being set in the jungle. If you are taking the children in your setting on an outing to the zoo or a pet farm, reading these books in the run up to the visit may be an ideal way to introduce the children to these animals.
The Farmyard Jamboree (with CD) is a lively book that uses rhyming text to encourage the children to count as page by page, it names the different animals and their babies.
1,2,3 it’s A Farmer’s Life for Me (with CD) promotes counting in a different way as the children spend a day working and playing on the farm. From gathering the eggs and milking the cows in the morning to closing the gate at night, this story takes you through a day in the life of a farming family, rhyming and counting all the way!
Meanwhile Over in the Meadow takes you to meet all of the residents in a typical meadow, from the “bumpy mother toad and her little toadie one…. Who winked and blinked in the sand in the sun” to the “hairy mother spider and her little spiders ten…. Who spun lacy webs in their sly little den”.
The Animal Boogie is a story set in the Indian jungle, encourages the children to engage in large muscle exercise along while singing and rhyming “Down in the jungle where the leaves lie deep… what’s that creature learning how to leap?”
All of the books above are available from the Early Childhood Ireland shop and members will be able to avail of a 30% discount on the titles mentioned.
