Press Release: Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic for Policy in Relation to Children and Young People

July 23, 2020

Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Integration, Roderic O’Gorman T.D., has yesterday (22 July 2020) announced the publication of the report ‘Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic for Policy in Relation to Children and Young People.’

This report, published by the ESRI, and produced in partnership with the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, draws on existing and emerging Irish and international research on the effects of the pandemic restrictions on children and young people.

It finds that the negative impacts of the pandemic will be most acutely experienced by children and families already experiencing disadvantage. It also says that while the Covid 19 pandemic has had few positive impacts, studies do suggest an increase in positive family time and, in a UK study, that 40% of parents anticipated a closer relationship with their children after the pandemic.

Educational disadvantage must be meaningfully addressed to ensure that all children meet their full potential, both in relation to their health and well-being and academic achievement. Early Childhood Ireland hopes that this important report will provide an impetus to build on this recognition and provide increased investment, recognising that the foundations of holistic education are laid in the early years.
