Garda Vetting Update 20 September 2022

Its that time of year again, so this week we look at the Garda Vetting requirements for transition year students.

Transition Year Students and Garda Vetting

A “Transition Year Student” is a student participating in an approved programme in a Department of Education and Skills second level school. A registered provider must ensure that they have consideration of a minimum of two references in writing for transition year students prior to starting in the service.
One of these references must be from the student’s current school. References should be requested from someone with first-hand knowledge of the student. References can be from the secondary school, previous employment or work experience or from any independent person in the community.

A school student on placement must be under the supervision of staff and not left alone with children at any time. Students cannot be regarded as staff and therefore cannot be considered as part of the adult/child ratio.

Garda vetting disclosure (and police vetting where applicable) is required for all transition year students over the age of 18 years. If required, it can also be sought for students under 18 years but over 16 years.

Please note: people under 16 years of age cannot be Garda vetted.

Garda Vetting for students aged 16 or 17 years of age

If an early years’ setting wishes to have the transition year students under 18 years vetted, a Parent Guardian Consent Form must be filled out and the parent or guardian must supply their own email address and phone number on the Vetting Invitation NVB1 Form (not the child’s email address and phone number). The Under18s Vetting- Invitation Form makes this clear and is especially for applicants under 18 year of age.

Once you have the NVB1 Under 18 form and the Parent Guardian Consent form and copies of Photo Identification and proof of address, enter the details of the applicant into our online Garda Vetting form, making sure the contact details (phone and email address) are of the parent/guardian.

If you have any queries about Garda Vetting please see our website https://www.earlychildhoodireland.ie/membership/garda-vetting/ or phone us directly on (01) 405 7102.
