Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Guidelines Training Feedback

Maureen from Stepping Stones Creche recently attended the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Guidelines Training. Here she tells us how the experience has transformed her practice in relation to diversity, equality and inclusion.

I recently attended the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Charter training. The training was great and helped us to make the connections we really needed with such a diverse range of families in our setting. It really opened our eyes to diversity. It alerted us to see that, while pictures, flags, maps, signs in different languages are all good, they are not enough. The simple way to embrace the Charter is to follow the example of children. Ask questions! Talk to your families. Ask your families for suggestions to celebrate their various culture, customs, societies and abilities. Ask what makes them feel comfortable and welcome.

Open nights are a great opportunity for the staff and families from all corners of the world, society and ability to meet up, to talk and learn about each other in a safe environment and can also be great fun. People are often afraid of what they don’t understand. The setting can be the bridge between what people think they know about others and what is true.

The training taught us how we can actively use the Charter in our practice. Partnership with parents is the key. Knowledge, acceptance and recognition of differences is how we become inclusive. I would advise anyone to take the course as soon as you can, what you learn can make a real difference to your setting.
