More receiving government funded childcare

August 1, 2018

The DCYA recently announced that over 200,000 children now avail of governmental childcare schemes. This includes 119,000 children taking part in the ECCE programme. Figures also show a significant uptake of the Access and Inclusion Model (AIM), which has provided supports to more than 6,000 children to date.

Early Childhood Ireland welcomes these figures as a very positive step. The significant uptake of ECCE and other schemes shows widespread recognition of the importance of the early years. This growing awareness was also evident from the results of the inaugural ECI Childcare Barometer published earlier this year.

However, the figures also highlight the need to significantly increase investment in the early years sector and its hardworking professionals. In order for staff to deliver a high-quality service that is affordable for parents and sustainable for settings, it is imperative to deliver comprehensive supports and robust funding.
