Play, Speak and Read
Supporting Children’s Communication and Literacy through Play
Children are born with an instinct and drive to communicate and make sense of the world. Their progress is greatest when they live in language rich environments and are supported by the families, communities and educators in their lives.
In early childhood we want to engage young children meaningfully, building vocabulary, listening, talking and understanding. We want to enthuse them and inspire them with a life-long love of stories and books. There is a real opportunity in the early years to build on home experiences and to provide for language and literacy across the pre-school curriculum in ways that are relevant and appropriate for young children. In developing language and literacy skills children have a strong sense of well-being, identity and belonging and are well placed to succeed in school.
This Autumn Roadshow builds on the national Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life framework. It will explore what literacy looks like for the pre-school child and will show the many ways in which early childhood practitioners can take and make opportunities for language and literacy across the play-based curriculum.
Have you wondered:
How children become literate?
How children’s emerging language and literacy can best be supported and extended in the early years?
How materials, routines and practices should be used and available in the service?
How literacy in early childhood fits with Aistear, Siolta and the Regulations?
The Roadshow is free to Early Childhood Ireland members and up to 4 of their staff.
There is a charge for non-members and booking for everyone attending is essential.
A ‘Language and Literacy through Play’ Booklet, designed to help and guide everyday practice, will be issued free to all those attending the Roadshow (as a benefit of membership).
