With school now nearly out, parents may be considering sending their children to summer camp. Summer camps can provide excellent opportunities for your child to grow in confidence, build self esteem, make new friends, foster independence and benefit from a new experience.
In considering what type of summer camp will suit your child, discuss the options with them and consider their interests, age and personality. Some camps will be specialized ie. an art camp, and some will have general themes, so decide together which would suit your child best.
There will be general issues to consider such as location, transport, times and cost of camp also.
What to check with the Summer Camp Provider
-
Is there a summer camp programme available for you to look at in advance?
-
The programme should be varied, interesting, age appropriate and stimulating for children
-
Does it provide value for money in terms of its programme?
-
The experience and qualifications of the staff
-
If some or part of the camp is outdoors, are their contingencies in place for bad weather?
-
How will the camp facilitate your child if he or she has additional needs?
-
Do they accommodate part timers?
-
Do they require a deposit – if so is it refundable or non- refundable?
-
What does your child need to bring with them to camp ie; food, old clothes etc.,
-
Are correct adult to child ratios adhered to ie., preschool regulations for children under 6 years old and for children over six years old, best practice would suggest a recommended ratio of 1adult to 10 children.
-
Will your child be going on any outings as part of the camp? If so the following adult child ratios should be adhered to: 1adult to 3 children for children in the 1 to 4 year age bracket: 1 adult to 8 children for children in the 5 to 12 year age bracket
-
Is there a health and safety policy in place with procedures in place for dealing with accidents, incidents, emergencies?
-
Is there a qualified first aider in place?
-
Is there a behaviour management policy in place?
-
Is the camp fully insured?
Above all summer camps should provide fun stimulating opportunities for your child. They should be child centred, inviting and happy places for your child.
